Memories
Memories From First Climb
I climbed my first 14er in 1979 in the Sangre de Christo's with a friend from my summer ranch job.  It was early in the season back when the road was open to the lakes.  We 4 wheeled in his Volkswagen bug until the creek crossings were too deep and camped in the road. We shared one ice axe on the couloir on the way up and I remember looking down on a very large camp at the lower lake as we started up the peak.  We had no issues on the ascent, ate, and napped on the summit before descending with some glissading on the lower slopes.  It was a great climb and I was hooked - These weren't too big a deal after all!  As we headed back down the trail, and on the road below the lakes, as we kept passing very grim urban looking youths headed up the road toward the big camp. They barely looked up and few actually greeted us.  A little disconcerting, but we did not think much of that until we returned to the ranch the next day and read the story of the deaths of a group of youths climbing Kit Carson the same day we had climbed the Crestone Needle.  They had been roped together and pulled one another off the mountain.  A sad day indeed which left a strong reminder how quickly a good time can turn sour without proper equipment and training.
Memories From First Member Year

I was fully convinced I had at least two more years before I would even be considered for membership and that was probably on the optimistic side!  I was placing my bets on a couple of other hopeful prospects as some bio information was being read on the new member during the annual dinner presentation.  It took way too long for the fog to clear to realize the bio was mine!  I had no clue it was coming.

Memories of Family
I remember as a kid in grade school, watching for the mirrors from our home in Colorado Springs.  The Sommers were also long family friends and I knew of their involvement in the club.
Favorite Memories from Climbing Fourteeners

Just remember family get togethers with the Sommers and borrowing an old pair of snowshoes from Bruce Sommers on one of my first winter attempts on Mount Quandry.

Memories from Favorite Mountain Climb
Memories of Favorite Gear
Memories of Worst Gear Failure
My 40+ year old vintage North Face Goretex shell failed miserably on our Wilson Peak, Mount Wilson, and El Diente climbing trip during one of the wettest and coldest climbs I've ever been on. Bottom line - Goretex just doesn't last forever! The jacket appears to be in excellent condition, but lacks much water resistance. It could have been really bad had it not been for other layers...
